Subtle Energy
Subtle energy, also known as subtle body or subtle energy system, is a concept found in both Yoga and Mahayana Buddhism.
It refers to the subtle energetic aspects of our being that interact with and influence our physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.
Understanding and mastery of subtle energy are considered integral to deepening one's spiritual practice and expanding consciousness.
In yoga, the subtle energy system is described in terms of nadis (energy channels - similar to TCM Meridian pathways), chakras (energy centers), and prana (vital life force - Qi in TCM). Nadis are the pathways through which prana flows, and chakras are specific points or centers where this energy is concentrated. The nadis and chakras are not physically visible but are considered part of the subtle body. By practicing yoga asanas, pranayama, and meditation, the aim is to balance and activate these subtle energies, promoting health, vitality, and spiritual growth.
In Mahayana Buddhism, the concept of subtle energy is often referred to as "subtle winds" or "subtle breaths" (Sanskrit: prana, Tibetan: rlung). Subtle winds are believed to flow through the channels of the subtle body, affecting both physical and mental processes. The subtle energy system in Buddhism is closely associated with the practices of meditation and energy manipulation. The cultivation and balance of subtle energies are considered important for spiritual development and the attainment of enlightenment.
